JOB DESCRIPTION

Paradigm Lumber is the fastest growing wholesale distributor of exterior and interior building products in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota. In this role, your responsibilities will include reviewing plans for takeoffs, preparing bid requests, managing multiple project estimates simultaneously, evaluating subcontractor estimates, and evaluating costs against historical and regional data.  

Our ideal candidate will be expected to work in a fast-paced estimating environment, understand the commercial and residential construction process, ability to read and understand building plans, and high proficiency in utilizing technologies including office and construction visualization software suites such as Auto Desk Products, Microsoft, and Blue Beam.

Specific duties may include: 

  • Develop bids for construction projects.
  • Select metrics to produce valid estimates.
  • Resolve cost differences by collecting info and analyzing data. 
  • Prepare detailed reports or bids for submission to appropriate parties.
  • Works closely with architects and other professionalsas needed.
  • Foster relationships with key vendors (subcontractors, architects etc.).
  • Stays up to date with safety codes and improvements in construction.
  • Analyzing requirement documents, blueprints and project plans to thoroughly understand the project.
  • Determining what factors of production will influence the cost of a service or product.
  • Preparing material estimates and cost estimates for the product or service.
  • Creating labor estimates for any project.
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with company vendors and contractors.
  • Managing bids from vendors and contractors.
  • Using bid data to prepare detailed a cost analysis.
  • Presenting prepared estimates to management and other stakeholders.
  • Tracking of potential projects via multiple forums and relationships.
  • Compiling and recording actual costs.

Skills & Requirements

  • Proven experience as a construction estimator.
  • Knowedge of building components, lumber, and practices. 
  • Ability to navigate specifications and plans.
  • Familiarity with analyzing requirement data to develop material and cost estimates for large projects.
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments at once.
  • Basic understanding of accounting and project management concepts.
  • Comfortable with numbers and technology.
  • Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • College degree (Drafting, Construction Management, Business, or other related field) or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Specific industry knowledge, including both familiarity with product lines and the overall building process.
  • Must have valid driver’s license and be able to pass MVR check. 
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Professional appearance and demeanor.
  • Superior time management and organization skills.
